You carefully balance yourself on the tip of the capstone, and slowly reach up to grab onto the tree root. You realize that there is no way you’d be able to pull yourself up with one arm while holding onto the torch; so you drop the torch and leap up to grab the root with both hands. The light of the flame grows dim as it rolls down onto the steps below, but stay lit and allows you to see just barely enough to plot your ascent. You swing your body and hook around the root with your legs; then begin to inch your body upward.
The higher you climb, the less you can see, until you are feeling your way through darkness; beginning to claw through loose soil that falls onto your head. You continue to dig until finally the darkness is pierced by light.
